Carlos Ruiz scored on a 54th-minute penalty kick as the Los Angeles Galaxy defeated the Fresno Fuego of the Premier Development League, 1-0, in an exhibition game Saturday night.

The Galaxy was awarded the penalty kick when Ruiz was taken down by defender Jarrod Souza as Ruiz tried to head a ball sent into the penalty area by Los Angeles midfielder Sasha Victorine.

Ruiz put the penalty kick inside the far goal post, under the outstretched right arm of Fresno goalkeeper Jeremy Proud.

Galaxy goalkeeper Kevin Hartman made four saves for the shutout at Clovis High School's Lamonica Stadium. Proud made four saves.

Los Angeles led 12-9 in shots.
