fresnofuego.com: In the News

Former PDL MVP Pablo Campos checks in with the Fresno Fuego and talks about the lifestyle of a pro soccer player in Sweden and playing against Sweden’s veteran striker Henrik Larsson.

FF: Fresno Fuego    PC: Pablo Campos

FF: Share with us your experience so far in Sweden.

PC: My experience has been both challenging and fulfilling. Learning a new culture, language and lifestyle is always a good experience. When I came here I left family and friends behind, and moving to this country required many adjustments. It is very different than the United States. As part of my profession, my social life is limited. However, I am meeting more people and becoming more familiar with this environment.

FF: What is the main difference between soccer in America and Sweden?

PC: The main difference between American and Swedish soccer is the pressure on me. In Sweden I am able to control the ball and turn more often. Additionally, defenders here would rather go towards their goal than charge the player who has the ball to make it harder for them to score.

FF: What does the future hold for Pablo Campos?

PC: The opportunities in my life have surpassed my expectations. I hope in the future doors will continue to open. At this point my focus is on the present and making the most of it.

FF: Are you planning on coming back to visit Fresno?

PC: I am planning on visiting Fresno and would like to play an exhibition game with the Fuego Team if it is possible.

FF:  Have you experienced any humorous situations in your adjustments to a new country?

PC: I’ve experienced a few funny situations here. I am trying to learn Swedish, but am far from fluent. Never the less, I asked a guy for lighter in Swedish to light the barbecue grill. The pronunciation of lighter and “are you attracted to me” are very similar. The guy looked at me like I was crazy. Thankfully my Swedish friend explained the miscommunication.

FF: Although soccer is considered the “Universal language” have you had any difficulty in communication with your new teammates?

PC: I have no problem communicating with my teammates, they all speak English.

FF: Do you have any Brazilian teammates as you did with the Fresno Fuego?

PC: There are three other Brazilians on the team, one of them plays on top with me.

FF: As a young professional have you played with or against any particular player in Sweden that has truly inspired you?

PC: I was really amazed with Larsson’s abilities; he is extremely quick and smart on the field. I had not seen him play since the World Cup in 1994. Ronaldo and Romario are still my role models, but I have had the pleasure of playing against Larsson.

FF:  Have you set any goals as an individual that you want to attain while playing abroad?

PC:  My goal is to play in the UEFA championship and win. I would also like to fight for the leading scorer title.

FF: What is the League in Sweden named, and what is the League Championship Cup called?

PC:  The first division league is called Allsvenskan. Sweden’s Cup is called, The Swedish Cup or Svenka Cupen.
